On November 21, 2023, we organized our first chess tournament with a longer 10+0 time control. Thirty players joined the event, which began at 18:15, with the promise of Lindt chocolates as prizes setting a lively and competitive atmosphere.
The tournament kicked off smoothly, with the top five players winning the first two rounds without much drama. Only Giacomo had to settle for a draw against a formidable Dorian in the second round. In the third round we saw Anton defeating Marcus, a result that made it almost impossible for Marcus to still win the tournament, though he impressively won all his other games, securing a second place in the end.
The tournament reached a peak in the fourth round, where the strongest players faced off. Anton managed to outplay Batu in an interesting match, and Lorenzo secured a win against Giacomo. The fifth round was critical in deciding the winner, with Anton and Lorenzo, both unbeaten until then, playing against each other. Anton won a tense rook and pawn endgame, with Lorenzo struggling with time management.
The final round brought some further unexpected turns. While Anton was leading for the first place, Batu and Lorenzo played for the second place. Their game ended in a draw, and with Marcus achieving a final win, he astonishingly claimed the second spot. To take matters further, Giacomo was able to defeat Anton, stirring up the race for the third place.
In the end, Lorenzo narrowly secured the third position by a margin of 0.5 in the second tie-break score, and Batu ended fourth. Anton, despite his last-round defeat, won the tournament due to a better tie-break score over Marcus. Giacomo finished fifth with the same score – 4.5/6 – as Lorenzo.
We thank all participants for their participation! Below, you can find some pictures and the complete results.
