Julius Bär Qualification Tournament 2024

This October Tournament was one of our most intense yet! 49 players gathered to compete in a seven-round Swiss tournament, each vying for not only for the chocolate prizes but also the coveted spots in the upcoming Julius Bär event. Eight people would be able to participate in that event, featuring grand masters like Judit Polgár and Anish Giri, but who would be able to grab the spots?

The start of the tournament went rather smooth for the more experienced players, who, despite the fierce competition from habitual players and new-comers alike, steadily rose to the top of the standings.

This led to a battle for the top places during the last few rounds that was very close and exciting. Round 6 delivered some of the tournament’s most intense games. Olivier faced Eroglu, both coming from a perfect winning streak. In a tightly contested match, Olivier eventually got the win. Very close behind with 5 points were Dorian who beat Onno and Subramanian who beat Yven. Max also joined the players with 5 points beating Federico.

In the final round, tensions were at their peak. Olivier faced rating-wise his strongest opponent yet, Subramanian, who was eager to spoil Olivier’s streak and possibly take the lead himself. Next to their board, Dorian was up against another formidable contender in Max, each looking for that last win to secure a top-three finish. In the end, Oliver proved himself unstoppable and secured first place with a perfect score. Dorian narrowly came out on top against Max and in an upset, Eroglu also won his last round and claimed third place.

A special mention to Anna who won the prize for the best female player. Together with her, seven others were able to come out on top and grab hold of a spot in the Julius Bär event: Olivier, Dorian, Subramanian, Max, Yven, Maximilian, and Noah. Congrats to all!
